Oh my goodness... I loved this novel, from start to finish. At times I wanted to speed read, to see what happens next, AND at the same time, I wanted to read it very slowly to savor every juicy morsel of poignant beauty. The author takes us deep into the spiritual psyche of her characters, enabling us to really feel their feelings, their joy, their grief, their love.
I loved this book and could hardly put it down. When I did, I carried the characters with me, almost like they were calling me back to their story. I was just so sad when it ended! I wish I could give it more than FIVE STARS!
I highly recommend this novel for a wonderful summer read! In fact, winter too. Think I'll reread it this fall.

I just finished this novel last night. I have only been moved to write one other book review on Amazon. I felt this book 'A Woman of Heart' certainly deserved a review. Wowzer! This is a rare gem. I thought it was an incredible read and one of the best books I have ever read. I will be adding it to my short and elite list of favorites. I am an avid reader and do not add to my list lightly.
This novel was an intelligent read. I found it to be imaginative and creative. As well as, incredibly well written. Alancraig's words melted in my mouth and many times sent chills down my spine. How in the world did she ever come up with such an amazing story? When writers are good at their art, they never cease to amaze me as Alancraig has done.
This is a book that begs to be read and re-read so the reader does not miss anything. What an interesting character study that I feel many readers can relate to and think about after the last page is turned. And, the twist with the ghosts and guardians can only be described as magnificent. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Bravo! Well done Marcy Alancraig!

This is the kind of novel you can take one delicious bite out of after another. The prose is beautifully crafted and the story combines vibrant colors of realistic families and characters whose past influences their every breath. They do not allow themselves to breathe deeply until Grandmother Rheabie passes on the family truths to her granddaughter Shoshona, who then turns to the rest of the family for validation and understanding.
Highly recommend this book by first time novelist Ms. Alancraig and hope she has more brilliance waiting in the wings.

After breaking her hip, 78-year-old Rheabie Slominski realizes that it's finally time to share the secrets of her life with her granddaughter, Shoshana. In this novel, "A Woman of Heart", the left-wing politics of Petaluma, California's thriving community of Jewish chicken ranchers of the 1920s is recreated as Rheabie Slominski tells the "true" story of her life to granddaughter Shoshana. Rheabie's tales about the chicken ranchers, a vibrant cluster of Zionists, anarchists and communists struggling to survive the Depression, are populated by the most surprising characters: unhappy family ghosts, mysterious Guardian spirits of the land, and strange Uncle Mas. Yet, when the Guardians begin to show themselves to Shoshana and she stumbles on even deeper family secrets, everything she knows about herself and her history is called into question.
